On the same card, you’ll find their total hours worked for the week and any overtime hours or lunch breaks they’ve used if you’ve asked for that info. From there, it’s just math — adding up the time card hours and handing them off to a manager.

How do you calculate work hours in an online time card?
While you can create a time tracking formula in a program like Excel or Sheets, some managers don’t want to go through the hassle.

Step one: Figure out your hours worked
Let’s start with the basics. To calculate how many hours you’ve worked, enter your start and end times for each day of the week. Doing this will show how many total hours you worked that week. Be sure you’re inputting the right time of day by checking the AM / PM drop-down menu. Some tools may translate those hours into decimal amounts, which makes payments easier later on.
Don’t forget to enter any paid break times or time off to your total number of hours worked.
Step two: Calculate your pay
At the bottom of the hours calculator, you can see that there is a total showing how many hours you’ve worked that week. If you want to calculate your payroll hours, multiply your total number of hours for the week by how much you make an hour. So, for example, if you get paid $18 an hour and worked 40 hours this past week, you’d be making $720.
Step three: Figure out overtime
What if you’re working overtime hours at your job? That requires a little more work. First, you want to figure out how many hours of overtime you’ve worked. Once you have that number, multiply it by whatever your overtime pay is (which is time-and-a-half in most places). Then, just add that number to your original total.
Step four: Save your hard work
All that’s left is to save your time card and hand it over to your manager. Simply export your time card and email it right from the calculator.

Contract or freelance teams
If you’re operating as a freelancer or contract employee, using an online time card calculator lets you bill more easily. Since it does the math for you, all you’d have to do is plug in how many hours you worked that week and send along your information to your manager or freelance contact.
Let’s say you work somewhere like an independently-owned coffee shop. Usually, you might clock in by writing down the time you entered the building and the time you left. What else do I need to know about time cards?
There are a few things you should keep in mind when either filling out or receiving time cards for a business.
According to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), workers in the United States who are classified as non-exempt are required to be paid overtime of at least one and a half times their regular hourly rate when 40 hours is exceeded per workweek. This is considered their overtime rate. Overtime pay law stipulates that not paying overtime is illegal if your employees are non-exempt.
This is not a hard and fast rule, though. There are exceptions and things to keep in mind.
For some industries, tracking time off can get a little messy. While some places take the “just let us know” approach, others may choose to find a way to track each employee’s time off. This is especially important if you offer paid time off, so your employees are still earning money while hiking the hills of Norway for two weeks.
The minimum wage is pretty much what it sounds like: the minimum amount of money that an employer is required to pay an employee.
The standard hourly rate for minimum wage in the U.S. is $7.25 an hour, but each state also has its own minimum pay rate. If your state’s required minimum wage is higher than the country’s requirement, you would then earn that higher amount. Depending on where you live, you could make more minimum wage than if you lived in another state. For example, if you’re lucky enough to live in Hawaii, the minimum wage there is $10.10 an hour.
Something to keep in mind: 19 states across the country have increased their minimum wage requirements for workers in 2019. Be sure to check rates for your state before proceeding.
